Is there an easy way of knowing the charges of ions by looking at the periodic table?

its all about oxidation numbers, for example H+ has an oxidation number of 1, and most alkalines do, so looking at the families of the table helps you get the oxidation numbers (there is a specific table for that just look up oxidation number table or something), when you have a compound, just sum up the oxidation numbers and the sum is going to be your charge. But from my experience there is a lot of experimenting to do (by that I mean doing exercises) because for most elements there are 2 or 3 possible oxydation numbers, so do exercises and you'll find a trick of your own to avoid confusion.
